Bitly.com Feature Suggestion

Bitly.com

I have one simple suggestion for the company behind Bitly.com… Please consider offering an optional email alert notification when someone clicks on a link. So let’s say by default the email notifications are turned off but if signed in with Bitly.com username you can easily turn on the following type of email notifications on any individual shortened link:

  • As-it-happens Email Notifications
  • Once-a-day Email Click Summary
  • Once-a-week Email Click Summary
  • Once-a-month Email Click Summary

So for example… I set a custom shortened URL for a particular social media campaign that I am going to run on various social sites, for this example we will use the custom shortened URL bit.ly/SEOSPORT which will redirect to the homepage of my company’s website. Let’s say that I run my campaign and didn’t want to have to keep checking the bit.ly/SEOSPORT+ page which shows all of the traffic details, instead I wanted these results to be emailed to me every so often.

Bitly.com may offer these things in their advanced dashboard but they don’t list these items on their Bitly Enterprise package comparison chart.

How can you expect somebody who doesn’t understand their actions, to be accountable for their actions? ~ Jonathon Hewitt

Subscribe to WordPress Multisite Forum Posts

by admin on November 17, 2011

WordPress Multisite formerly called WordPress MU which allows you to run multiple WP sites from one single WP installation to create a network of blogs and have them all managed through one dashboard. I think everyone should try installing a fresh set of WP files and following the fairly easy instructions to create a network of your own.

I feel that it is so important to keep up with that I wanted to subscribe to WordPress.org’s forum updates regarding the topic, since they didn’t offer email subscribtions for topics, I have burned their feed myself from the WordPress Multisite Forums page on WordPress.org forums. If you would like to subscribe to this feed via email then just click Subscribe to WordPress Multisite Recent Support Forum Posts by Email.

If you like the little box they provide then I guess I can provide that to you here:

Life’s Answers Come By Asking Questions

by Jonathon Hewitt on September 10, 2011

Everyday I question myself whether I am man enough for my amazing wife.

Every hour I question myself whether I deserve the beautiful children that she has provided me with.

Every minute I question myself how I ever got so lucky in the first place.

Every second I tell myself that these things have all happened because I cared enough to question myself all the time.

Weird Google Sitelinks

by admin on August 10, 2011

Has anyone ever seen any sitelinks quite like these? I haven’t! And I don’t think they are all that helpful to the user as its just duplicate information over and over taking up more space on Google’s SERPs. Let me know your thoughts!

What is an SEO Optimized Website?

by Jonathon Hewitt on November 24, 2010

Everyone for the most part can hear the term “Search Engine Optimization” and respond with a “oh yeah that’s that Google stuff right?”. Well ummm, yes, it is. But the truth of the fact is that with even the normal person out there knowing what it is(kinda), there are very few people actually doing it. And of the people that are doing it, very few are actually doing it right. Let’s just say there is LOTS of room for improvement in every industry on the web! We are going to take a look into exactly how much “Room” there really is… So keep reading!

A website is mearly a place on the web where you can display information to multiple people at once. The name of the game is to have the absolute best website, the best products or services, the best calls to action and to show your website to as many people as possible! So let’s talk about the different ways that you can get traffic to your website.

1) Search Engines – This is a very common place on the web that people use everyday to find information on the web. There are many different types of search engines; Web search engines Google and Bing, image search engines, blog search engines, rss search engines, mobile search engines, wiki search engines, product search engines, video search engines, social search engines and many many more.

Maximizing Your Domain Name’s Usability

by Jonathon Hewitt on November 24, 2010

What about the user?

In most anything now-a-days its the little things that make a difference, when you are on your way to a friends house and all you know is that they have the only brick house on the block and thats how you find their house every time or when a person remembers what they searched for to find a website but doesn’t know how to get to that website otherwise. So with your friends brick house; you found something to differentiate that house from the other homes around it and it is just about the same with the internet surfer that remembered a short term to search for to reach this particular website. This just reminds us that most humans do the same with just about anything we remember. With web development the user experience is key to creating an efficient application(website) that has been optimized from top to bottom, inside and out. I’d like to talk about only one of the many ways to maximize how users are able to access your web content with some handy DNS settings and 301 Permanent redirects. Read on and see if you have anything to add to this conversation…

In the world wide web there still remains a lot of sites that you cannot enter without using the www meaning that whoever set up their DNS (domain name servers) settings did not set things up properly. And yes there are still a lot of old school www type people in the world that don’t know that you can (or should be able to) enter a website without typing the www. From an SEO perspective you want to make sure that your DNS settings are working properly to avoid problems and maximize usability. For starters you want to make sure you make a clear and defined path to your website, to do this you need to choose whether you going to host it with a www or not, then you must create the path to get to your choice from the both entry points. I chose to use what people are most familiar with so therefore I did mine with the www. You may choose otherwise, there is no proven performance gain or loss when it comes to the search engine friendly-ness of your two options.

The best and most common practice is to set up an A record without the www and have it pointed at your website host’s ip address and then creating a CName record www.yourdomain.com and make it alias to yourdomain.com. This way there is not duplicate A records which can cause some issues with the way your website is crawled and indexed.

On top of making sure the base settings work properly there are some further setting that you can set up to improve the usability of your domain name and website. As the web browsing enthusiast that I am I have come to appreciate the little “shortcuts” that I have found along the way while using some high traffic websites. Creating subdomain 301 permanent redirects that are easy for people to remember such as having blog.yourdomain.com redirect to yourdomain.com/blog could be found useful as well as pointing a subdomain redirect at your social profiles which usually have all different types of url and username structures. You could create twitter.yourcompany.com and make it easier for people to find and follow you. Google does a good job with this as just about anything they have is accessable if you type it in front of the root domain as a sub-domain or is you type it as a directory or page slug after the .com/… For instance: analytics.google.com will bring you right to google.com/analytics. Pretty easy huh?

Do you have any different and creative ways that this can be used in your industry or niche? Let me know in the comments below!
